Children are afforded the opportunity to receive their specialized educational program in an inclusionary setting. We collaborate with the South Jamaica Center for Children and Families Head Start Program located on the campus of York College. Classroom instruction is child-centered utilizing the High Scope Curriculum. Our inclusion classes are conducted in an open classroom setting where children engage in the activities of their choice within a "plan-do-review" framework. Professional teaching and therapeutic staff enhances the child-focused curriculum through observation, direct, and indirect treatment approaches. The individualized educational goals and objectives of each student are addressed in this manner. Program support staff includes a social worker, psychologist, educational coordinator, speech therapist, physical therapist and an occupational therapist. The class configuration contains a special education teacher and paraprofessional from Small wonder Preschool and a regular education teacher and paraprofessional from the Head Start program. The student to teacher ratio is 20:2:2. (8:1:1 special needs) For further information on enrolling your child in this program, contact the education coordinator at: 718-849-3002 |
